The Maldives remains the most desirable destination, according to Kuoni’s annual poll.

The top ten list of destinations people most want to visit is included in the Kuoni Travel Trends Report 2012.

The Maldives has been number one since 2005.

There is also no change in the next five positions in Kuoni’s top ten, with Thailand, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, US and Mauritius, all keeping places two to six respectively.

This year, Barbados, which was at number ten in 2011, is at number seven, replacing Italy, which has fallen out of the top ten.

Kenya has fallen from eighth place to ninth, while Malaysia has jumped from ninth place to eighth.

Singapore, which was not on the 2011 list, is in at number ten this year.

The UAE is the only mid-haul destination on the list and Kuoni attributes a growing interest in Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah for its success.

Although not in the top ten, Kuoni predicts South Africa will witness huge growth over the next 12 months, helped by the exposure from the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and the weakened currency against sterling.

Kuoni’s 20-page report also tracks travel trends for different sectors, such as weddings and honeymoons, families and solo travellers.

The report also highlights changes in holiday behaviour and includes trends in holiday booking behaviour, such as the importance of social media in driving holiday choices.

For specific types of holidays, the Maldives retained its top slot for honeymoon destinations and also topped the wishlist for digital natives, better known as Generation X, Y and Z.

Sri Lanka remained the top destination for weddings, Kuramathi Island Resort in the Maldives kept the top slot for family destinations, as did Thailand for solo holidays.

Figures in Kuoni’s Travel Trends Report are based on booking patterns for 2011 and customer feedback.
